Project Management
Creating a suite of useful technical documentation is, indeed, a project. I use a blended approach to managing my documentation projects. Initially, I create an Information Plan that maps out key components of the documentation. It lists the names of the documents that I will create, the names of the subject matter expert who will help me develop the information and, also explicates high level task and audience analysis.
Then I connect items in the developer's Agile product backlog to procedures and explanations in the document set and, ideally, release documentation in sync with the product.

The Tools I Use
To create user guides, quick start guides, and installation guides, I use Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe Acrobat, and SnagIt.
To create e-learning modules and video tutorials, I use Adobe Captivate and Abobe Flash.
To develop websites, I use Adobe Dreamweaver, WordPress, and Notepad++.
Other tools I use include: LaTeX, Confluence, Jira, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
